Oral Wegovy (semaglutide) is a once-daily tablet developed to support effective weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related comorbidity such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. It belongs to the GLP‑1 receptor agonist class of medications. It contains the same active ingredient as the injectable Wegovy pen, but as a distinct tablet formulation with its own dosing schedule, absorption enhancer, and administration requirements.
How It Works
Semaglutide, the active ingredient in oral Wegovy, mimics the naturally occurring GLP‑1 hormone. By acting on receptors in the brain that regulate appetite, and by slowing gastric emptying, it helps reduce hunger and calorie intake. These effects lead to gradual, sustained weight loss.
The tablet includes an absorption enhancer that allows a small amount of semaglutide to pass through the stomach lining. Because absorption is limited and sensitive to food and other tablets in the stomach, it must be taken strictly on an empty stomach, and its dosing and pharmacokinetics differ from the injectable pen; it is not a like-for-like swap.
Why Choose Oral Wegovy
- Needle-Free: Designed for individuals who want the benefits of semaglutide without a weekly injection.
- Once-Daily Routine: Fits into a morning routine, subject to strict fasting and timing rules (see Directions).
- Same Active Ingredient: Uses the GLP‑1 hormone pathway as injectable Wegovy, in a different tablet formulation.
- Cardiometabolic Support: May improve markers such as blood pressure and cholesterol as an indirect result of weight reduction, rather than as a primary licensed effect.
Availability
Oral Wegovy is approved for use in the UK. It is currently available privately only and is not yet funded on the NHS, pending NICE evaluation. Check current NHS commissioning guidance before assuming routine NHS access.
Important Note
Oral Wegovy is not a substitute for healthy lifestyle choices, but it can significantly enhance the results of a weight management plan when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. It must be prescribed and monitored by a healthcare professional. This medication is not suitable for those with a personal or family history of certain thyroid conditions. Follow all dosing instructions carefully and attend regular reviews to track progress and adjust treatment as needed.
